- KANZ, heya wines
At Belly, we love serving food and drink with a story; flavours that carry history, passion, and purpose. Heya Kanz is one of those wines we’re especially proud to pour. It’s not just a bottle; it’s a journey from mountain vineyards in Lebanon to the women whose skills and resilience shape every drop.
A Story That Begins with Knowledge, Not Grapes
Heya Kanz is made by the women harvesters of the Kanz Vineyard in Lebanon, part of the Heya Wine Community. Heya means “she” in Arabic, and Kanz means “treasure”, and this wine truly is one. The story starts not in the fields, but in the classroom: a wine school built for women, where they learn the craft of winemaking alongside running households and raising families.
This is one of the few places in the region where women are given equal pay, equal opportunity, and respect. The result? A wine that embodies empowerment as much as it does terroir.
Crafted in the Mountains, Aged in Clay
From Kfifrn in the Batroun mountains, 400m above sea level, the vines grow in clay and limestone soils that lend a unique minerality. Grapes are fermented in amphora (long terracotta pots that encourage slow, natural development), using carbonic whole cluster maceration, which allows the fermentation to happen within the grape itself. The wine is unfined and unfiltered, keeping every bit of its personality intact, this leaves the distinct chalky mouth feel.
Bright, Juicy, and Full of Life
Served lightly chilled, Heya Kanz bursts with red plums, cherries, and dried flowers, with a soft chalky finish. Medium-bodied, juicy, and gently tannic, it’s nothing like the heavy reds you may be used to; it’s fresh, fruity, and made for sharing over a long lunch or a bistro dinner.
Why It Belongs at Belly
At Belly, we’re about more than great taste, we’re about stories worth savouring. Heya Kanz fits perfectly on our wine list because it’s a reminder that food and drink are about people, place, and purpose. Every glass supports a community of women who are redefining their future, and every sip connects you to the mountains of Lebanon.
